Over 71% of battered women in a recent national study reported that their abuser had harmed, killed or threatened their family pets. 75% of these incidents occurred in front of the women and/or children. These animals are hostages used by abusers to maintain the cooperation and control of their victims. It has always been this way... let's end it now.
American Humane Association's PAWS Program: A one-of-a-kind program designed to keep women and children seeking shelter from domestic violence and their pets together. 48% of battered women stated that they would have left sooner if they could ensure the safety of their pets. This stuff will break your heart, but should lift it, as well- More has been done to alleviate the pain and suffering of these people and pets in the last ten years than ever previously.
