Artist Statement

With an eye made quiet by the power of harmony, and the deep power of joy, we see into the life of things.” ~ William Wordsworth

Life is the best magic there is. To capture the joy of living, even in the seemingly mundane: This is my goal as an artist.

Whether I'm shooting a portrait or a landscape, I'm telling the story of life, capturing the moment in time and distilling it to produce my vision of that moment. Abstraction is one means with which I reduce a complex set of items or subjects to barest terms to reach the simplicity of time and place. The idea is to draw the eye to the real story.

As a storyteller, my ultimate joy is to capture your attention and urge you to stay, to learn the rest of the story my image is trying to tell you. Sometimes the narrative is a commentary, sometimes environmental, sometimes it's simply humor- but every image is to me, a portrait.

There is life in an old barn, stories within it's walls. Likewise, I believe there is life in a rock. Even if you don't agree, there is certainly life under it, in the soil it rests upon. It carries the tale of it's surroundings, as well as how it came to rest in that place- even how it was formed.

A child spinning in delight knows only that moment- no other. The tree reaching skyward knows how to simply BE, all the while performing advanced chemical processes still out of reach of humankind as it creates food from sunlight for itself and others.

To me, there is a wisdom in simplicity. There is joy in being a difference. When you see the truth you know it, and that is all there is.
